Area grows with the square of the radius
Every ring's area is computed the same way, area = πr², with r as the ring's radius in miles. Because the radius is squared, area doesn't grow in a straight line as the radius grows -- it accelerates. The table below, computed live by this exact formula, makes that concrete: notice how the 100-mile ring's area isn't 100 times the 1-mile ring's area, it's 10,000 times larger, because area scales with radius squared (100² = 10,000).

Reading overlapping rings
With all six rings shown at once, the map draws largest-first so smaller rings stay visible on top rather than being hidden underneath a large one's fill. Each ring has a light, mostly-transparent fill specifically so overlapping rings stay readable rather than stacking into a solid block of color -- toggle any ring off in the table above if a particular comparison still feels cluttered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why these six preset radii specifically?
1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles cover the range most people actually reach for: a 1-mile ring for a short walk or a tight urban delivery zone, 5 and 10 for a neighborhood or a mid-size service area, and 25 through 100 for regional planning, catchment areas, or "how far is X from here" questions at a larger scale. Why does the area more than double each time the radius roughly doubles?
Because circle area scales with the square of the radius (area = πr²), not the radius itself. Going from a 5-mile to a 10-mile ring doubles the radius but quadruples the area; going from 25 to 50 miles does the same. It's easy to underestimate how much ground a "just a bit bigger" radius actually covers -- the table below makes that jump explicit.
Can I show just one or two rings instead of all six?
Yes -- uncheck any ring in the table to hide it from the map. This is useful for comparing just two specific radii (say, 10 vs. 25 miles) without the smaller and larger rings cluttering the view.
Do these rings account for roads or driving time, like a 10-minute drive radius?
No -- every ring here is a straight-line geometric radius, not a drive-time isochrone. A "10-mile ring" means every point on its edge is 10 miles from the centre as the crow flies; actual driving distance and time along real roads will be longer and will vary by direction. This site doesn't offer drive-time isochrones.
